Taiwan promises 'necessary assistance' to Hong Kong's people

Image
Taiwan has become a refuge for a small but growing number of pro-democracy protesters fleeing Hong Kong, which has been convulsed since last year by anti-Beijing and anti-Hong Kong government protests.
Hong Kong police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse thousands of people who rallied on Sunday to protest against Beijing’s move to introduce new national security laws.
Writing on her Facebook page late on Sunday, Tsai said the proposed legislation was a serious threat to Hong Kong’s freedoms and judicial independence.
Bullets and repression are not the way to deal with the aspirations of Hong Kong’s people for freedom and democracy, she added.
“In face of the changing situation, the international community has proactively stretched out a helping hand to Hong Kong’s people,” Tsai wrote.
Taiwan will “even more proactively perfect and forge ahead with relevant support work, and provide Hong Kong’s people with necessary assistance”, she wrote.
Taiwan has no law on refugees that co…

Lagos Bus Rapid Transit Violates Social Distancing Guideline, Resumes Full Operation

Image
In violation of the social distancing guideline put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19, the Bus Rapid Transit in Lagos has been carrying full passengers.
The state government had on March 25, 2020, ordered that the BRT must not transport beyond 21 passengers per trip, adding that the drivers must not permit standing in their buses.
However, in total disregard for the guidelines, the BRT being operated by Primero Transport Services Ltd., has reversed to normal operations by carrying full passengers and allowing passengers to seat on the aisle of the buses.
A passenger, who spoke with our correspondent, said the BRT buses loading from Yaba to Ikorodu had begun full operations since Friday.
"I enter the BRT buses going from Yaba terminal to Ikorodu daily. On Friday when I went to board the bus, despite the existing inflation of fee by Primero, they have now reverted to carrying full passengers.
"The drivers even carried passengers and told them to sit on the floor to avoid…

Covid-19: Wuhan lab admits to having three live strains of bat coronavirus on site

Image
The Chinese lab eyed as a potential source of COVID-19 has admitted having three live strains of bat coronavirus on-site — but insisted none are the source of the global pandemic.
The Wuhan Institute of Virology has since 2004 “isolated and obtained some coronaviruses from bats,” its director Wang Yanyi said in an interview that aired Saturday, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
“Now we have three strains of live viruses… But their highest similarity to SARS-CoV-2 only reaches 79.8 percent,” Yanyi said, referring to the coronavirus strain that causes COVID-19.
“It’s an obvious difference,” she said, according to AFP.
Yanyi trashed the conspiracy that the pandemic started in her lab — one pushed by President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo — as “pure fabrication.”
Her scientists had never “encountered, researched or kept the virus” until it received samples on December 30, when it had already unknowingly taken hold on Wuhan, the contagion’s epicenter, she said.
“In fact,…

MJ lied multiple times in 'The Last Dance'- Jordan Rules Author

Image
ESPN’s epic 10-part documentary series “The Last Dance” left many basketball fans positive that Michael Jordan was, without question, the greatest basketball player of all time – but some critics have questioned just how objective the depiction of Jordan’s Bulls really was. Jordan, of course, had full control over the release of the project, and the footage was only ever unsealed with his blessing.
Since the series aired, former Bulls big man Horace Grant sounded off on the documentary, calling Jordan a liar and saying that the show was “B.S. in terms of the realness.” Scottie Pippen was also
reportedly upset by his portrayal.
According to the guy who quite literally wrote the book on Jordan, “Jordan Rules” author Sam Smith, The Last Dance was more like a show “based on a true story” than it was a accurate examination of history. In an interview with on the Bonta, Steiny and Guru show on 95.7 The Game in San Francisco, Smith said that Jordan lied or made up several things that ended u…

Side Piece: Kylie Jenner "Wasn't Surprised" by Those Drake Lyrics

Image
Hello, good morning, and I hope you woke up ready to rehash some celeb drama from earlier this week, cause if you recall, Drake called Kylie Jenner a "side piece" in a song that he recorded with Future, and we now have some updates. You may also recall that back in November there were rumors that Drake and Kylie were dating, so this whole thing seems kind of messy.
However, the .01% of you who were rooting for Drake and Kylie's relationship are in luck, cause it looks like Kylie wasn't upset by Drake's lyrics. A source tells E! that Kylie "wasn't surprised" and adds, "She has no hard feelings about it. She knew it was old. Her and Drake are still very good friends and she just laughed it off...Drake and Kylie still keep in touch regularly and all is good."
Plus, Kylie "appreciated" that Drake quickly apologized after the song was leaked. The day after, he posted an Insta Story saying:
A song that Mark ran last night on Night Owl …

Borussia Dortmund 2- Wolfsburg 0

Image
Borussia Dortmund scored a goal in each half through Raphael Guerreiro and Achraf Hakimi to beat hosts VfL Wolfsburg 2-0 on Saturday (May 23) and stay on the heels of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
Portugal international Guerreiro tapped in a cutback from Thorgan Hazard after Erling Haaland had failed to connect in the 32nd minute, and Hakimi fired in from a fine Jadon Sancho assist in the 78th to make sure of the three points.
The result lifted Dortmund to 57 points, one behind Bayern, who are in action against Eintracht Frankfurt later on Saturday. The Bundesliga resumed last week with no fans, after more than two months of suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dortmund next face Bayern on Tuesday in a game that could go a long way to deciding the championship.
Wolfsburg, who suffered their first defeat in eight league games, were left with 10 men when substitute Felix Klaus was sent off for a rough challenge.

Covid-19: More than 40 diagnosed with COVID-19 after Frankfurt church service

Image
More than 40 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus following a church service in Frankfurt, Germany’s financial center, earlier this month, the head of the city’s health department told a news agency on Saturday.
“Most of them are not seriously ill. As far as we know only one person has been admitted to hospital,” Rene Gottschalk told the dpa agency.
The service took place on May 10 at a Baptist church, the department’s deputy chief Antoni Walczok told local newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau. On its website https://www.seidheilig.de the church says it holds services in both German and Russian.
“The situation is very dynamic,” Walczok told the paper, adding the church did not violate official guidelines aimed at containing the spread of the virus.
Churches in the German state of Hesse, where Frankfurt is located, have been able to hold services since May 1 provided they adhere to official social distancing and hygiene rules.
Frankfurt’s health department was not available…

Health Care: The shocking reason hospitals keep their prices a secret from you

Image
Congress has provided hospitals with nearly $200 billion of our hard-earned tax dollars to help them weather the coronavirus pandemic. House Democrats just passed a bill adding another $100 billion. Now it’s time to stop bailing out hospitals and start helping financially stressed families get better health care at lower costs.
In health care, most prices are hidden. Earlier this month, big, profitable hospital systems were in court to make sure that American patients remain in the dark, challenging a Trump administration rule that would require them to publicize prices, including those negotiated with insurance companies.
No other industry is fighting to hide prices from consumers. When given pricing information, people know how to shop for value. With websites like Amazon and Kayak, Americans use price information to secure the best deals. This forces providers to compete by lowering prices and improving quality. Health-care markets don’t work like this.
Imagine going to the grocery…

Coronavirus immunity could disappear after six months, study finds

Image
Immunity to the coronavirus could only last up to six months, scientists say.
A study at the University of Amsterdam found that those who survived the coronavirus could become reinfected within six months, casting doubt on the concept of “immunity passports” to allow survivors of the virus to return to normal life, according to a report in The Science Times .
For 35 years, University of Amsterdam scientists, led by Lia van der Hoek regularly tested 10 men for four coronaviruses that cause the common cold. While most were reinfected within three years, there were “significant” drops in antibody levels after six months, the study found.
“Coronavirus protective immunity is short-lasting,” van der Hoek said. “We saw frequent reinfections at 12 months post-infection and substantial reduction in antibody levels as soon as six months post-infection. Achieving herd immunity may be challenging due to rapid loss of protective immunity.”

Fire rips through San Francisco’s famed Fisherman’s Wharf

Image
Flames are ripping through a warehouse on San Francisco’s fabled Fisherman’s Wharf as firefighters battled to save a historic World War II ship.
The four-alarm fire, which has covered the city in a cloud of smoke and haze, began early Saturday morning, and threatened the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, firefighters told the local ABC News affiliate . The ship is one of two fully functioning Liberty ships launched during World War II.
Crews on a fire-boat were able to save the ship but the warehouse is “a total loss,” firefighters said.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the early morning blaze, is still unknown.

Messy Divorce: Jaime King Accuses Kyle Newman of Abuse & Withholding Sons as He Claims She Is 'Chronic Drug Addict'

Image
Jaime King's split from estranged husband Kyle Newman is far from amicable.
Along with her divorce petition filed on May 18, the actress filed a domestic violence prevention petition that includes allegations of verbal and emotional abuse against Newman. She also claims Newman — who has been staying in Pennsylvania during the coronavirus pandemic — is withholding their sons, James Knight, 6, and Leo Thames, 4, from her.
Newman has responded with his own series of allegations that King has engaged in reckless behaviors that have endangered the children.
In the documents obtained by PEOPLE, King, 41, claims the couple have been struggling for five-and-a-half years. Newman "berated me ... told me I was a terrible person and a terrible mother," she claims in the documents.
King also claims Newman has "appeared at a friend's house ... screaming and harassing me, chased me in his car, isolated me from friends, professional contacts, and employers by telling them lies …

Social Distancing: Lagos BRT buses may withdraw services next week

Image
Primero Transport Services Ltd., operator of the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) may withdraw its services on May 25, due to logistics problems and other issues, an authoritative source disclosed on Friday.
The source said that the company might likely run out of diesel and other supplies that would likely disrupt BRT operations.
“Primero is planning to withdraw all its buses from the road from May 25. The company is running out of diesel.
“Suppliers have not been supplying diesel fully because the firm is owing them. The company is currently running at a loss.
“Primero will run out of the supply of diesel and other supplies by Monday. So it is not likely the buses will run,” the source re-stated.
Efforts to talk with the Managing Director of the company, Mr Fola Tinubu, on the development was not successful.
On May 15, NAN reported a shortage of BRT buses across various routes, presence of long queues and an increase in awaiting time at BRT stations in Lagos.
BRT users have been compla…

At least 63 members of staff had previously tested positive for the virus and are currently being isolated.

FG makes clarifications on reopening of schools

Image
The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has disclosed that the Federal Government is already making plans to reopen schools nationwide but it won’t happen in two weeks as being speculated in some quarters.
Speaking during the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Thursday, Nwajiuba said there was no exact date yet as to when schools will reopen.
He also urged members of the public to disregard rumours making the round on social media that the Federal Government would reopen schools in the next two weeks.
According to him, schools will be reopened after they are resourced properly.
He said “We all are seriously interested in reopening and I believe we will reopen soon.
“But I can’t confirm what your children said that we will reopen in two weeks.
“The issue around reopening has nothing to do with the availability of the schools or not. It has to do with national governance.
“The idea of shutting down the schools has nothing to do with the schoo…

The Last Dance: Dennis Rodman calls out Bulls teammates’ over ‘The Last Dance’ complaints

Image
There has been mixed feedback about ESPN’s “The Last Dance” documentary about NBA icon Michael Jordan and the ‘90s Chicago Bulls, including from Jordan’s former teammates Horace Grant and Scottie Pippen,
who were apparently unhappy with how they were portrayed.
Dennis Rodman, on the other hand, wasn’t having it with any of his former teammates’ reported complaints.
Rodman, a five-time NBA champion with the Bulls and “Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons, said they shouldn’t be complaining about how they were portrayed because this was something of their own doing.
“The players were a little upset because they felt Michael was throwing them under the bus. ‘You guys wasn’t [sic] doing what I want you to do, I’m the greatest, I’m determined to win no matter what,’” Rodman said on the “Good Morning Britain” program, according to the Mirror. “The next thing you know, Michael starts to talking [sic] about the whole team… the teammates I played with.”
“Mentally, I don’t think they were strong enough to…

British Council future in jeopardy due to severe impact of pandemic on finances, major union warns

Image
A major union has warned the
British Council ’s future is in jeopardy without emergency government funding, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to have a severe impact on the organisation’s financial stability.
Founded in 1934, the council is one of the oldest cultural relations bodies in the world and is considered vital to the Foreign Office ’s “soft power” overseas – promoting the UK through arts, culture and education abroad.
Employing more than 1,000 members of staff, the public body, which is also a registered charity and sponsored by the Foreign Office, operates in more than 100 countries and had an income exceeding £1.25bn in the last financial year.
But the outbreak of Covid-19 and various government-imposed lockdowns across the world has forced the body to close the vast majority of its English language schools – a major source of funding – leading to warnings of mass redundancies in the near future.
Despite a recent £26m injection from the Foreign Office, the Public and C…

No Disrespect to my Friend!!!- Drake

Image
Drake clearly woke up to some problems, he just addressed the track, saying, "A song that mark ran last night on night owl sound live set shouldn't have been played. It's a song that leaked 3 years ago and got scrapped shortly after. He was just going too deep in the drake/future catalogue. Last thing I'd want to do is wake up having any friends of mine feeling disrespected so I just had to say that to start the day."
Drake's relationship with Kylie Jenner 's been fueling the rumor mill for months, and now that he's referred to her as "a side piece" -- on wax, as we used to say -- expect it to heat up.
Here's the deal ... Drake went on Instagram Live Wednesday night to tease some unreleased music from a collab with
Future .
On the track, the duo raps about all the hot women they're able to haul in, and Drake spits these lyrics -- "Yeah, I’m a hater to society / Real sh*t, Kylie Jenner that’s a side piece / Yeah, I got 20 motherf…

Absentee Voting: Republicans, Democrats push ahead on absentee voting even as Trump blasts Michigan over it

Image
Weeks before President Donald Trump lashed out at Michigan leaders for considering a plan to send absentee ballot applications to all registered voters, West Virginia did exactly what Trump is now condemning.
So did Nebraska. And Iowa. And Georgia. And several other states.
Trump, who has railed against vote-by-mail for weeks, took his assault a step further Wednesday, threatening to withhold federal funds from Michigan if it "illegally" sends absentee ballot applications to the state's citizens before its primary Aug. 4 and the election Nov. 3. He blasted Nevada on Twitter, calling its plan to send absentee ballots to all registered voters before its primary June 9 a "great Voter Fraud scenario."
But mailing absentee ballot request forms to all voters has been widely used in other states, helmed by Republicans and Democrats alike, in recent weeks. It has become a more pressing issue before state primaries, 17 of which were delayed from this spring because of t…

University of California regents unanimously vote to drop SAT and ACT admissions requirements

Image
One of the largest and most prestigious university systems in the country made a landmark decision on Thursday, reshaping its admissions process by ditching standardized testing.
The University of California Board of Regents unanimously voted to suspend the SAT and ACT testing requirements for freshman applicants through 2024 and eliminate them for California students after that – a plan proposed by Janet Napolitano, the university's system's president.
“Today’s decision by the Board marks a significant change for the University’s undergraduate admissions,” Napolitano said.
Instead, the UC system – which includes about 280,000 students across the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of California, Berkeley, and seven other undergraduate schools – will focus on creating its own test "that better aligns with the content the University expects students to have mastered for college readiness" and its values, according to a news release.

President Buhari has planted more animosity among Nigerians than Biafran civil war – HURIWA

Image
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointments since assuming power has planted so much animosity among Nigerians.
HURIWA said Buhari’s appointments in the past five years has caused animosity among Nigerians than the Biafran civil war did.
A statement by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director, Miss Zainab Yusuf lamented that Muslims have enjoyed the “topmost juicy” appointments under Buhari.
The statement reads: “Buhari’s administration in the last five years has planted animosity between different ethnic nationalities than the civil war created.
“It will take the Grace of God and the will to overpower our differences for Nigeria to rebuild the bridge of unity that the selective administrative style of President Muhammadu Buhari has destroyed in the last five years.
“It is regrettable that even within the core Moslem North which enjoys the topmost juicy feder…

President Buhari under fire for giving ‘strategic’ appointments to Fulani, Hausa, Kanuri

Image
A Civil Rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has expressed apprehensions over the lopsided appointment by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government.
HURIWA condemned the continued domination of strategic appointments by Hausa, Fulani, and Kanuri extraction under Buhari’s administration.
It stressed that due to the deep-seated Northern Muslims domination of all strategic federal appointments under Buhari including the skewed appointments in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), the next government may need to “convoke a year-long National Constitutional Conference to try to mend the deeply broken fences.”
A statement sent to DAILY POST by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko reads: “The current Government under President Muhammadu Buhari has skewed all strategic appointments to favour his cronies and political affiliates in the Core Moslem North and a sprinkling o…

Last Dance: Scottie Pippen ‘livid’ at Michael Jordan for ‘Last Dance’ portrayal

Image
“The Last Dance” appears to have turned Michael Jordan’s most important teammate against him.
According to an ESPN Radio host, Scottie Pippen is “livid” and “so angry” with how he was portrayed in the Bulls docuseries that detailed the dynasty through Jordan’s eyes.
Jordan called Pippen selfish in Episode 2 for delaying ankle surgery until right before the 1997-98 season forcing him to miss the first couple of months during a bitter contract dispute with general manager Jerry Krause. Jordan also took a vague shot at Pippen’s struggles in Game 7 of the Bulls loss to the Pistons in the 1990 Eastern Conference final, which were due to a migraine.
“[Pippen] felt like up until the last few minutes of Game 6 against the Jazz [in the 1998 NBA Finals], it was just ’bash Scottie, bash Scottie, bash Scottie,’ ” David Kaplan said on his ESPN 1000 “Kap and Company” show in Chicago.
Pippen’s alleged feelings come a day after
Jordan was slammed by Horace Grant , who was a part of the team’s first t…

Apple's Siri violated the privacy of millions- Whistleblower

Image
The whistleblower who exposed in 2019 that Apple contractors listened to users’ Siri recordings without their knowledge or consent has gone public to protest the lack of action taken against the technology giant.
In a letter, sent to all European data protection regulators, Thomas le Bonniec said that Apple had conducted a “massive violation of the privacy of millions of citizens.”
He wrote that although news of the case had already gone public, the technology giant “has not been subject to any kind of investigation to the best of my knowledge.”
Mr Le Bonniec, who was hired by one of Apple’s subcontractors in Ireland called Globe Technical Services, had to listen to recordings from users and correct transcription errors. Listening to hundreds of recortings from Apple’s iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches, many of them were taken “outside of any activation of Siri” – meaning that users were not aware of the action.
As well as recording their owners, Apple’s devices also picked up speech …

Organ Donation: The law surrounding organ donation in England has changed

Image
The law surrounding organ donation in England has changed, meaning that most adults in the country will
now have to “opt-out” if they do not wish to be a donor.
It is hoped that the change will lead to an additional 700 transplants each year by 2023, and spark conversations around organ donation.
According to the NHS, nearly 4,000 transplants took place in 2018/19. However, there are currently around 6,000 people on the UK Transplant Waiting List and last year alone, more than 400 people died while waiting for a transplant.
Speaking of the new law, Anthony Clarkson, director of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation said: “We are very pleased that Max and Keira’s Law has passed its final round of parliamentary approval and we welcome the new legislation.
“We hope this law change will prompt all of us to consider whether or not we would want to donate our organs and encourage us all to register and share our decision with our family and friends. We will continue to provide the v…

O just announced a massive pledge Wednesday through her Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation, which is spreading the $12 million around underserved communities in places she's lived -- Baltimore, Chicago, Milwaukee and Nashville -- and Kosciusko, Miss., where she was born.
The beloved talk show host says wealthy people need to step up and donate, because the novel coronavirus is not going away. She says even when the virus is gone, people will still be reeling from the devastation it's causing their livelihoods, particularly folks who live paycheck to paycheck and are burning through savings amid the raging pandemic.
Oprah says she's donating to the 5 cities she once called home because it's important to look into your own backyard and your own neighborhood to see how you can help less fortunate souls.
